Frankfurt Auto Show: Volkswagen Reveals Golf GTI Clubsport Edition

Volkswagen at Frankfurt Auto Show has unveiled the Golf GTI Clubsport, a special edition built to celebrate the Golf GTI's 40th anniversary.

The turbocharged direct-injection engine in the anniversary model makes 195kW, some 33kW more than on current Golf GTI.

In addition, for a stretch of around 10 seconds, the driver can increase engine power by an additional 10 percent using a boost function. This added power is activated simply by kicking down the accelerator.

The Golf GTI Clubsport sprints to 100km/h in 6.0 seconds with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the optional six-speed dual-clutch gearbox is even faster at 5.9 seconds.

The front-wheel drive Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport has a top speed of 250km/h. In manual guise, it sips at a claimed 6.9 litres per 100km, while the DSG model is even more frugal at a claimed 6.7 litres per 100km.

In terms of styling, the Golf GTI Clubsport gains a new front bumper, new side sills, a new rear diffuser, a new multi-part roof spoiler, and exclusive forged alloy wheels.

The anniversary model also sports a stripe down each side (with "Clubsport" lettering), paying homage to the 1976 Golf GTI, as well as high-gloss black side-mirror caps.

The redesigned roof spoiler is much larger than its counterpart on the current GTI, and is complemented by the gloss black rear diffuser. The chrome-plated tailpipes, meanwhile, have also been redesigned, featuring a larger diameter.

The anniversary model features folding racing bucket seats instead of sport seats. The seats are partially covered with Alcantara and feature a honeycomb pattern in the area of the back rests and seat cushions. The backrest also incorporates "GTI" lettering.

Decorative features include Alcantara trim on the gear-lever and steering wheel, as well as customised floor mats with red edging.

Catch Pokemon in the Real World with "Pokemon Go" App

Nintendo is planning to bring popular video game series Pokemon into the real world, using augmented reality technology. With this game, Pokemon masters can catch, train and battle their monsters in real locations.

Pokemon Go is a free app that’ll be out next year and seems to work just like Ingress, as you’re directed towards locations in the real world to hunt for pokémon. The phone superimposes them onto your view of the local park, or wherever you are, and you can then try to catch them as you would in the games.

Junichi Masuda, director of the handheld Pokemon games at game studio Game Freak, is contributing to the project, which is being developed by Nintendo, The Pokemon Company, and former internal Google team Niantic.

The Pokemon franchise began in 1996 with the original Game Boy games, since selling 260 million copies worldwide, and has since expanded to include trading cards, films, toys and comics.

Hyundai Launches New Avante

Hyundai on Wednesday launched a totally revamped version of its flagship Avante compact.

The launch is expected to fuel competition in the market segment against GM Korea's Cruze, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

"The Avante AD is completely different from the Avante MD, which was released five years ago," claimed Hyundai vice chairman Yang Woong-chul. "The new model offers the best quality, performance and safety in its class."

Cumulative global sales of the Avante since its debut in 1990 surpassed 10 million units in October last year, making it Korea’s first single vehicle model to achieve the feat.

2016 Audi A8 L Security - Highest Armouring Level Achievable by a Civilian Sedan

Whatever your feelings about a world where the rich and powerful feel the need to lock themselves into armoured boxes when they go out in public, it remains a noteworthy achievement that Audi has built what looks for all the world like a standard long-wheelbase A8 luxury sedan, but will withstand multiple hits on both metal and glassed areas from full-bore 7.62mm Nato rifle ammunition - or a 15kg TNT blast from just two metres away.

The latest version of the A8 L Security, which will be seen in public for the first time at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show, is now rated VR9 - the highest civilian armoured standard there is.

Anything more bulletproof than this, is officially a tank.

The safety cell of the A8 L Security is encased in hot-formed steel armour, special aluminium alloys and aramide fabric, and the windows are laminated from specially toughened glass to make them just as robust as the metal body.

Each example is built to order in collaboration between the Neckarsulm plant where 'standard' A8s are made and a top-secret security firm. And if we told you that workshop was, we'd have to kill you…

LUXURY OPTIONS

Standard security features include an armoured telecoms box in the boot, an intercom for communication with the outside world and selective door unlocking. Optional extras include an emergency escape system, onboard fire-extinguishers, an emergency fresh-air system, as well as most of the luxury options on the standard Audi A8 wish-list.

Armour-plated SUV's are not unusual, but Audi claims the A8 L Security is only armoured luxury sedan available ex-factory with all-wheel drive, and the high proportion of aluminium used in its construction keeps the all-up weight down, allowing a maximum payload of 600kg.

It's available with a choice of two petrol engines - either a four-litre biturbo V8 rated at 320kW and 600Nm, or a naturally-aspirated W12 FSI that's good for 368kW amd 625Nm. In either case the electronic speed limit of 210km/h is there to protect the very stiff run-flat tyres.

Order yours now for delivery in the second quarter of 2016 and, to paraphrase the old chestnut, if you have to ask how much it costs, you don't really need one.

Apple's New App "Move to iOS" Will Make Android to iOS Transition a Bit Easier

Apple announced that it is releasing a new app in the Google Play store caleed “Move to iOS” to help Android owners to dump their phones in favor of the new iPhones. The app will transfer photos, messages and other data from an Android phone or tablet to an iOS device.

“You can recycle your Android phone for free at any Apple Store,” the app helpfully notes at one point during the transfer process.

During the company’s event, Apple executive Eddy Cue claimed that an increasing number of Android owners are switching to iPhone. Making that process even simpler is just “the neighborly thing to do,” Cue said.

Globally, the vast majority of smartphones run on Android.

Scientists Reanimate New Giant Virus Frozen for 30,000 Years

An ancient virus preserved in the Siberian ice for 30,000 years is to be brought back to life by scientists – to find out if it could harm humans.

No one knows whether the virus could harm humans or animals.

By reanimating the Mollivirus sibericum virus – a ‘giant virus’, one of four such prehistoric viruses to have been found – the scientists hope to learn more about viruses which could be unleashed as global warming hits frozen areas.

Scientists fear that global warming and thawing ice could unearth dangerous diseases – such as smallpox, frozen into the corpses of victims.
‘A few viral particles that are still infectious may be enough, in the presence of a vulnerable host, to revive potentially pathogenic viruses,’ said lead researcher Jean-Michel Claverir.

The virus was discovered by the French National Centre for Scientific Research in the Kolyma lowland region of Russia.
The researchers write, ‘The fact that two different viruses could be easily revived from prehistoric permafrost should be of concern in a context of global warming.’

This Origami Zippered Tube Makes Paper Structure More and More Stiff

Researchers have developed a new “zippered tube” that makes paper structures that are stiff enough to hold weight and fold flat for convenient shipping and storage.

The researchers have used an origami technique called Miura-ori folding. They make precise, zigzag-folded strips of paper, then glue two strips together to make a tube. While the single strip of paper is highly flexible, the tube is stiffer and does not fold in as many directions.

The researchers tried coupling tubes in different configurations to see if that added to the structural stiffness of the paper structures. They found that interlocking two tubes in zipper-like fashion made them much stiffer and harder to twist or bend. The structure folds up flat, yet rapidly and easily expands to the rigid tube configuration.

“The geometry really plays a role,” said Paulino, a former Illinois professor of civil and environmental engineering. “We are putting two tubes together in a strange way. What we want is a structure that is flexible and stiff at the same time. This is just paper, but it has tremendous stiffness.”

The zipper configuration reportedly works even with tubes that have different angles of folding. By combining tubes with different geometries, the researchers can make many different three-dimensional structures, such as a bridge, a canopy or a tower.

“The ability to change functionality in real time is a real advantage in origami,” Filipov said. “By having these transformable structures, you can change their functionality and make them adaptable. They are reconfigurable. You can change the material characteristics: You can make them stiffer or softer depending on the intended use.”

The team used paper prototypes to demonstrate how a thin, flexible sheet can be folded into functional structures, but their techniques could be applied to other thin materials, Filipov said. Larger-scale applications could combine metal or plastic panels with hinges.

Next, the researchers plan to explore new combinations of tubes with different folding angles to build new structures. They also hope to apply their techniques to other materials and explore applications from large-scale construction to microscopic structures for biomedical devices or robotics.

WhatsApp Crosses 900 Million Monthly Active Users

The company’s co-founder and CEO Jan Koum announced that WhatsApp has recently reached the milestone of 900 million Monthly Active Users (MAUs), and it still has no plan for how to monetize such a huge user base. When Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg talked about his plans for WhatsApp back in February 2014, he said money was not the focus, but growth.

last year, the messaging app has been on a streak when it comes to its monthly active users (MAUs).

And it’s not the only achievement that WhatsApp can boast with. In a recent report by App Annie, the messaging service ranked in the top 10 most downloaded iOS apps, right after Facebook’s main app, Facebook Messenger and Facebook-owned Instagram.

While Facebook’s plans with WhatsApp are to keep it simply a messaging service, that’s not the case for Facebook Messenger. Ever since it became a standalone app late 2011, the app also became a central focus of development for the tech company.

In 2014, Facebook completely removed the option of chatting from the main app and forced its mobile users to download the separate app. This year, the process of growing Messenger into its own platform has continued, with more and more options and features rolled out with each update.

Amazon Plans to release a $50 Tablet in time for the holiday season - Wall Street Journal report

Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon planning to release a $50 Tablet in time for the holiday season.

The 6-inch screen tablet comes with a mono speaker and is priced much lower than Amazon's Fire tablet, the cheapest variant of which is sold at $99.

Amazon also plans to release 8-inch and 10-inch screen tablets, the report said. While other Amazon Fire tablets show advertisements as screen savers, it was not clear if the new 6-inch tablet's cost included ads, according to the report.

The move would potentially attract buyers looking for a simple—and effectively disposable—device for straightforward tasks like streaming video at home and shopping on Amazon.com. But such inexpensive tablets typically come with compromises like inferior screen quality, durability or battery life in comparison to more expensive tablets like Amazon’s larger Fire tablets and industry-leading devices like Apple Inc.’s iPad. For instance, the $50 device will have a mono speaker, rather than stereo, one of the people said.

“Will people tolerate a potentially inferior experience just because a tablet is $50?” said Frank Gillett, a Forrester Research analyst. “Amazon has to be very careful about what they’re giving up to get to that low price point.”

Google's New OS, the Android Marshmallow 6.0 Comes with Exciting Features

The Android M 6.0 update for Google's mobile operating system, was unveiled at the 2015 I/O Conference.

The notable features of the Marshmallow 6.0 are listed below:

1. Google Translation

Users no longer have to go to the Translate app to look up a following word, as holding finger on a certain word now presents the option of interpreting it via Google Translate. For instance, if you are reading something, and you come across a foreign word that you cannot comprehend, all you need to do is long-press that particular word and the device would present you with the option of translating it.

2. Chrome Custom Tabs

In Google's current OS, the Android Lollipop, clicking on a link within an application opens the Chrome browser. This is not the case for the Android M, which will make Chrome function along with the app. So if you click a link within an app, it will not launch Chrome separately but will instead display a Web view within the app.

3. App Permissions

In the new OS, users have the ability to deny permission to apps trying to obtain personal information. However, it should be noted that if you do not grant permission, some of the certain parts of the app might not work normally. Users can also allow access during the app's installation process and then disable it later, the news outlet noted.

4. Battery Manager

If your phone run out of battery then Doze app will automatically cut off some of the device's processes minimizing battery consumption. The handset will snap out of its Doze state once a priority notification or alarm goes off.

5. Emergency Service

Android M also has a newly enabled feature that shows an overview of Google Maps whenever users call 911 or the emergency number of their residence. In this feature, the emergency service and Google Maps work by displaying "the emergency service center they're connected with during a call," with the current location and information of the caller also shown on the map "so they can more easily give those specific details to the emergency dispatch person on the line with them," Android Headlines wrote. This way, help can be dispatched quicker to those in dire need of it.

6. Android Pay

With Android Pay, users can now incorporate their credit and debit cards with their handsets to create a virtual account number, put it near a contactless terminal, and pay for their purchase.

Toyota Investing $50 Million in Research for the Development of Autonomous Cars

Toyota is investing $50 million into artificial intelligence research in partnership with MIT and Stanford University.

Toyota, the world’s largest car maker, envisions cars of the future that will act as “guardian angels,” watching the driving behavior of humans and intervening to correct mistakes or avoid collisions when needed.

Dr. Pratt said Toyota’s goal was to keep the “human in the loop” in the car of the future and to ensure that driving remained fun. “A worry we have is that the autonomy not take away the fun in driving,” he said. “If the autonomy can avoid a wreck, it can also make it more fun to drive.”

Driver assistance technology — like pedestrian and bicyclist detection and avoidance systems, lane-departure warning and “lane keeping” systems, and software programs that alert drivers that they are becoming drowsy — have already become standard safety options from carmakers.

The Toyota program will focus on developing more artificial-intelligence-based monitoring systems. For example, in the future, an A.I. system might do more than warn drivers that they are leaving their lane and actively correct all kinds of driver errors. Another possibility might be to use A.I. technologies to permit aging drivers to continue to drive by offering driver assistance in areas like vision and reaction time.

Polaroid's Snap Instant Camera Prints Photos Without Using Ink

Polaroid unveiled the pocket-sized Snap instant digital camera at IFA Berline 2015. It can print photos with a simple push of a button using Zink Zero Ink Printing technology.

It has a 10-megapixel sensor and a microSD card slot that can hold up to 32GB of storage. Best of all, the Snap can print out full color 2×3 inch (about wallet size) photos without requiring ink cartridges, toners or ribbons.

What is Zink Zero Ink Printing technology?

The Zink photo paper is made of composite material embedded with cyan, yellow and magenta dye crystals and has protective polymer overcoats. A 50-pack of Polaroid’s 2×3 inch Zink photo paper costs about $29.99 on Amazon.

The Polaroid Snap has multiple capture modes, a photo booth app and a self-timer feature. The capture modes includes color, black and white and vintage. The photo booth app can take six pictures in only ten seconds. And the self-timer feature helps you seamlessly take selfies.

Before a photo is printed, the dye crystals are colorless — which makes the Zink paper look like ordinary white photo paper. Using heat activation, the Zink-enabled Printer colorizes the crystals. Each photo fully prints in slightly under one minute. And the Zink Paper is adhesive-backed so you can use the printed photos as stickers.

Offered by C&A Marketing, an authorized Polaroid licensee, the Polaroid Snap instant digital camera will be on display in hall 3.2 booth #218 at IFA 2015, September 4-9 in Berlin, Germany. The camera will be available in black, white, red and blue in Q4 2015 for $99.

Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition - Jason Camberis builds World’s Largest Arcade Machine

Jason Camberis, a 44-year-old network engineer from Chicago has built the huge gaming ark that dwarfs fully-grown men.

It stands over 14 feet tall and is more than 3 feet deep. Camberis told Guinness World Records that he decided to make the machine to “make people smile” after seeing so much bad news around. He also wanted to replicate the feel of being in an arcade as a kid and having to reach up to grab the controls. Looking at the machine in action, he’s done just that — even down to the giant quarters needed to fire it up.

The arcade machine is 2.75 times bigger than a regular cabinet in all aspects with giant buttons, a 16-inch trackball, and retractable stairs that help you reach the controls.

It plays over 200 classic arcade games and is also compatible with PC and a range of consoles, according to Camberis.

The machine is another great example of how passionate gamers are about their hobby. Camberis has actually taken his love one step further — the self-confessed arcade fanatic builds and sells custom arcade machines and security systems for a living.

Things You Need to Know About Paper Shredders

Paper shredder is a great tool that is used to cut paper/documents into chad, typically either strips or fine particles. It is mainly used to destroy private, confidential, or otherwise sensitive documents. These kinds of shredders are widely used in every small business, health and research organizations, large corporations, military organizations, embassies, and some of the most sensitive government sites in the world.

The Importance of Shredding Documents

Paper shredding is required by many industries, including medical, legal and government agencies. These companies are required to keep client information secure and maintain a paper trail of how sensitive documents have been stored and, ultimately, destroyed. These companies are often subjected to audits to ensure compliance to both federal and state regulations. While comparing paper shredding companies, it is important to choose one that is National Association for Information Destruction, or NAID, compliant. This means the company has been certified to follow all required safety procedures, and will provide you with a certificate of destruction that serves as proof of compliance should your company ever be audited.

Paper Shredding Services: What to Look For

When choosing a paper shredding company, note that most charge by the box rather than by the pound. Boxes are generally classified as file boxes, or bank boxes, that aren’t very deep. It is also good to note the amount of paper your company will need to shred. Several companies have both one-time shredding services and regular, ongoing pickup and shredding services available. While frequency varies by the paper shredding service, and your company's individual needs, typical service ranges from weekly to monthly pick-up cycles. Here are some additional points to consider while comparing shredding services.

Security
When you are looking for a shredding service, the most important security factor to consider is that no one should ever see the documents you are shredding. Each box should be locked, and no one should handle the documents before shredding. Do not accept anything less when finding the best paper shredding service.

Another factor to consider is National Association for Information Destruction, or NAID, certification. NAID is a non-profit group that certifies document and other private information-destruction companies. It will ensure that the company is following all governmental regulations and keeping all shredding and destruction services secure. Additionally, look for a company that provides the security line, or the trail of when your documents leave your facility, when they arrive at the shredding point and which employees have handled the paper. Cross-shredding is more secure than strip cutting since your documents will be shredded so small and in inconsistent shapes that it would be impossible for an identity theft to piece them together in order to snatch sensitive information.

Other Services
The best paper shredding companies offer services beyond destroying documents. Media and hard drive destruction are important services to look for if your company stores a lot of sensitive material in digital formats. Also, some companies are equipped to handle destruction of prototypes and product samples and other sensitive material that you don't want landing into the hands of your competitors.

Other services to consider are document imaging, which is the transferring of physical documents into a digital format, and records archiving. This service allows you to store important documents for an extended period of time without running out of your own office space.

Shred Options
Most of the paper shredding companies we compared have both onsite and offsite paper shredding options. The frequency of when your material is picked up varies, though most work on a weekly or monthly basis. Some companies have drop-off services available, so you can bring your sensitive material directly to them and bypass the pickup service. All of the services we reviewed send the shredded paper to a recycling center to be made into new paper products.

Customer Support
When selecting a paper shredding service, you'll want to find a company that is simple to work with and easy to use. The customer support team should be able to give you a free price quote and help you set up the service in a matter of minutes. Whatever questions you have about convenience or safety with the paper shredding service should be answered via phone calls or emails in a timely fashion.

When legal compliance is on the line, it’s important to find a service you can trust with your sensitive documents. Use our comparison of the best paper shredding services to choose a secure, NAID-compliant company that meets your needs.

How Does a CDMA Technology Work?

CDMA stands for Code-Division Multiple Access and it refers to any of several protocols used in second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) wireless communications. It is a form of multiplexing, which allows numerous signals to occupy a single transmission channel, optimizing the use of available bandwidth. The technology is used in ultra-high-frequency (UHF) cellular telephone systems in the 800-MHz and 1.9-GHz bands.

CDMA employs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) in combination with spread spectrum technology. Audio input is first digitized into binary elements. The frequency of the transmitted signal is then made to vary according to a defined pattern (code), so it can be intercepted only by a receiver whose frequency response is programmed with the same code, so it follows exactly along with the transmitter frequency. There are trillions of possible frequency-sequencing codes, which enhances privacy and makes cloning difficult.

The CDMA channel is nominally 1.23 MHz wide. CDMA networks use a scheme called soft handoff, which minimizes signal breakup as a handset passes from one cell to another. The combination of digital and spread-spectrum modes supports several times as many signals per unit bandwidth as analog modes. CDMA is compatible with other cellular technologies; this allows for nationwide roaming. The original CDMA standard, also known as CDMA One, offers a transmission speed of only up to 14.4 Kbps in its single channel form and up to 115 Kbps in an eight-channel form. CDMA2000 and Wideband CDMA deliver data many times faster.

The CDMA2000 family of standards includes 1xRTT, EV-DO Rev 0, EV-DO Rev A and EV-DO Rev B (renamed Ultra Mobile Broadband -- UMB). People often confuse CDMA2000 (a family of standards supported by Verizon and Sprint) with CDMA (the physical layer multiplexing scheme).

Nextbit Unveils “Cloud-first” Smartphone - Robin

Nextbit, a mobile developer that was created by former Google, Apple, Amazon, and HTC employees, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for its new Android smartphone, Robin.

It offers 32GB of internal storage alongwith 100GB of online storage absolutely free. If the Robin determines that you may not need something on your phone because you don’t use it often, it will automatically upload the content to the cloud. The infinite storage “smarter” smartphone’s Kickstarter campaign is already well past its funding goal of $500,000 with 28 days left to go.

The idea behind the Nextbit Robin is that rather than you having to decide what to keep in the cloud, the software does it for you in a seamless and autonomous way.

Speaking of hardware, the Robin is a uniquely designed mid-range Android phone. While that’s nothing new, what sets Robin apart is that it learns from you, adapts to you, and does the clean up for you. Tapping on a removed app re-downloads and installs the app from Nextbit’s cloud, merges it with the personal data stored on the phone, and launches.

As the Robin offloads data and apps not regularly accessed by users into the cloud, they remain accessible but do not take up storage space needed by more regularly accessed apps and files. Nextbit Robin will hit general retail in Q1 2016, for $399 (£260). “And when you want any of it, you’ll get it back just it was before”. Nextbit insists its solution is superior, however, as it seamlessly backs things up whenever ideal conditions are met (Wi-Fi connection, phone is plugged in) and users don’t have to remember to open an app to make sure their photos are backed up.

The Robin is Nextbit’s first phone, but the developers have been involved in the production of phones including the HTC One M7 and M8, along with earlier phones including the HTC Evo and G1.

Everyone’s had their phone run out of storage before and it’s frustrating as hell trying to figure out what to delete. Robin’s reliance on cloud-based storage could provide an answer to consumers who are frustrated by the lack of microSD slots on modern devices, or those who constantly run out of space.

Nextbit’s CEO Tom Moss says that the company is trying to do something different to tackle what he calls “phone fatigue”. Nextbit has built Robin on this cloud USP and thus it is very unlikely that the company would try to make some extra bucks by offering more space. The back of the phone is home to a 13-megapixel rear camera with phase detection autofocus and RAW support as as well as four LEDs that light up when you’re connected to the cloud.

The team from Nextbit also said that this tech could be used for other purposes, such as optimizing your photos for you or maintaining the out-of-the-box speed you get on a new phone, but reps refrained from making any concrete promises.
