Things You Need to Know About Paper Shredders

Paper shredder is a great tool that is used to cut paper/documents into chad, typically either strips or fine particles. It is mainly used to destroy private, confidential, or otherwise sensitive documents. These kinds of shredders are widely used in every small business, health and research organizations, large corporations, military organizations, embassies, and some of the most sensitive government sites in the world.

The Importance of Shredding Documents

Paper shredding is required by many industries, including medical, legal and government agencies. These companies are required to keep client information secure and maintain a paper trail of how sensitive documents have been stored and, ultimately, destroyed. These companies are often subjected to audits to ensure compliance to both federal and state regulations. While comparing paper shredding companies, it is important to choose one that is National Association for Information Destruction, or NAID, compliant. This means the company has been certified to follow all required safety procedures, and will provide you with a certificate of destruction that serves as proof of compliance should your company ever be audited.

Paper Shredding Services: What to Look For

When choosing a paper shredding company, note that most charge by the box rather than by the pound. Boxes are generally classified as file boxes, or bank boxes, that aren’t very deep. It is also good to note the amount of paper your company will need to shred. Several companies have both one-time shredding services and regular, ongoing pickup and shredding services available. While frequency varies by the paper shredding service, and your company's individual needs, typical service ranges from weekly to monthly pick-up cycles. Here are some additional points to consider while comparing shredding services.

Security
When you are looking for a shredding service, the most important security factor to consider is that no one should ever see the documents you are shredding. Each box should be locked, and no one should handle the documents before shredding. Do not accept anything less when finding the best paper shredding service.

Another factor to consider is National Association for Information Destruction, or NAID, certification. NAID is a non-profit group that certifies document and other private information-destruction companies. It will ensure that the company is following all governmental regulations and keeping all shredding and destruction services secure. Additionally, look for a company that provides the security line, or the trail of when your documents leave your facility, when they arrive at the shredding point and which employees have handled the paper. Cross-shredding is more secure than strip cutting since your documents will be shredded so small and in inconsistent shapes that it would be impossible for an identity theft to piece them together in order to snatch sensitive information.

Other Services
The best paper shredding companies offer services beyond destroying documents. Media and hard drive destruction are important services to look for if your company stores a lot of sensitive material in digital formats. Also, some companies are equipped to handle destruction of prototypes and product samples and other sensitive material that you don't want landing into the hands of your competitors.

Other services to consider are document imaging, which is the transferring of physical documents into a digital format, and records archiving. This service allows you to store important documents for an extended period of time without running out of your own office space.

Shred Options
Most of the paper shredding companies we compared have both onsite and offsite paper shredding options. The frequency of when your material is picked up varies, though most work on a weekly or monthly basis. Some companies have drop-off services available, so you can bring your sensitive material directly to them and bypass the pickup service. All of the services we reviewed send the shredded paper to a recycling center to be made into new paper products.

Customer Support
When selecting a paper shredding service, you'll want to find a company that is simple to work with and easy to use. The customer support team should be able to give you a free price quote and help you set up the service in a matter of minutes. Whatever questions you have about convenience or safety with the paper shredding service should be answered via phone calls or emails in a timely fashion.

When legal compliance is on the line, it’s important to find a service you can trust with your sensitive documents. Use our comparison of the best paper shredding services to choose a secure, NAID-compliant company that meets your needs.

How Does a CDMA Technology Work?

CDMA stands for Code-Division Multiple Access and it refers to any of several protocols used in second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) wireless communications. It is a form of multiplexing, which allows numerous signals to occupy a single transmission channel, optimizing the use of available bandwidth. The technology is used in ultra-high-frequency (UHF) cellular telephone systems in the 800-MHz and 1.9-GHz bands.

CDMA employs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) in combination with spread spectrum technology. Audio input is first digitized into binary elements. The frequency of the transmitted signal is then made to vary according to a defined pattern (code), so it can be intercepted only by a receiver whose frequency response is programmed with the same code, so it follows exactly along with the transmitter frequency. There are trillions of possible frequency-sequencing codes, which enhances privacy and makes cloning difficult.

The CDMA channel is nominally 1.23 MHz wide. CDMA networks use a scheme called soft handoff, which minimizes signal breakup as a handset passes from one cell to another. The combination of digital and spread-spectrum modes supports several times as many signals per unit bandwidth as analog modes. CDMA is compatible with other cellular technologies; this allows for nationwide roaming. The original CDMA standard, also known as CDMA One, offers a transmission speed of only up to 14.4 Kbps in its single channel form and up to 115 Kbps in an eight-channel form. CDMA2000 and Wideband CDMA deliver data many times faster.

The CDMA2000 family of standards includes 1xRTT, EV-DO Rev 0, EV-DO Rev A and EV-DO Rev B (renamed Ultra Mobile Broadband -- UMB). People often confuse CDMA2000 (a family of standards supported by Verizon and Sprint) with CDMA (the physical layer multiplexing scheme).

Nextbit Unveils “Cloud-first” Smartphone - Robin

Nextbit, a mobile developer that was created by former Google, Apple, Amazon, and HTC employees, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for its new Android smartphone, Robin.

It offers 32GB of internal storage alongwith 100GB of online storage absolutely free. If the Robin determines that you may not need something on your phone because you don’t use it often, it will automatically upload the content to the cloud. The infinite storage “smarter” smartphone’s Kickstarter campaign is already well past its funding goal of $500,000 with 28 days left to go.

The idea behind the Nextbit Robin is that rather than you having to decide what to keep in the cloud, the software does it for you in a seamless and autonomous way.

Speaking of hardware, the Robin is a uniquely designed mid-range Android phone. While that’s nothing new, what sets Robin apart is that it learns from you, adapts to you, and does the clean up for you. Tapping on a removed app re-downloads and installs the app from Nextbit’s cloud, merges it with the personal data stored on the phone, and launches.

As the Robin offloads data and apps not regularly accessed by users into the cloud, they remain accessible but do not take up storage space needed by more regularly accessed apps and files. Nextbit Robin will hit general retail in Q1 2016, for $399 (£260). “And when you want any of it, you’ll get it back just it was before”. Nextbit insists its solution is superior, however, as it seamlessly backs things up whenever ideal conditions are met (Wi-Fi connection, phone is plugged in) and users don’t have to remember to open an app to make sure their photos are backed up.

The Robin is Nextbit’s first phone, but the developers have been involved in the production of phones including the HTC One M7 and M8, along with earlier phones including the HTC Evo and G1.

Everyone’s had their phone run out of storage before and it’s frustrating as hell trying to figure out what to delete. Robin’s reliance on cloud-based storage could provide an answer to consumers who are frustrated by the lack of microSD slots on modern devices, or those who constantly run out of space.

Nextbit’s CEO Tom Moss says that the company is trying to do something different to tackle what he calls “phone fatigue”. Nextbit has built Robin on this cloud USP and thus it is very unlikely that the company would try to make some extra bucks by offering more space. The back of the phone is home to a 13-megapixel rear camera with phase detection autofocus and RAW support as as well as four LEDs that light up when you’re connected to the cloud.

The team from Nextbit also said that this tech could be used for other purposes, such as optimizing your photos for you or maintaining the out-of-the-box speed you get on a new phone, but reps refrained from making any concrete promises.

Russian New Data Law Raises Questions About Privacy

Russian's new personal data law has raised many questions about privacy of the internet users.

The new law was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in December 2014 and outlined that companies supplying Internet services in Russia, or targeting Russian users, should store personal data in Russia. Those who didn’t should have transferred it onto Russian territory by Sept. 1, 2015.

Critics of the new law speculated that its sole purpose was to extend the government’s control over society by closely monitoring popular social networks, but the lawmakers insisted their only intention was to protect Russian citizens.

While some companies — such as Samsung, Booking.com, PayPal, eBay, Lenovo and AliExpress — expressed readiness to comply with the new rules, U.S. Internet giants Facebook and Google aren’t in a rush to do so.

The new law will never be implemented, Russian Internet personality Anton Nosik claimed in his blog on Monday, because it doesn’t specify how government agencies will determine which data belongs to Russian citizens and which doesn’t.

Aston Martin Unveils DB9 GT James Bond Edition

Aston Martin unveiled the Bond Edition DB9 GT on Thursday saying that for more than half a century Aston Martin has been the sports car of choice for the world's most famous spy, James Bond.

Aston Martin make beautiful looking luxury sports cars but it is hard to see Bond driving this car with 007 and James Bond plastered gaudily over the interior and on sill plates.

The cars are painted in "unique Spectre silver" and there are "special" wheels while other branding add ons include special luggage and a watch. And no, ejector seats, machines guns etc are not part of the add ons.

Enthusiastic Bond fanatics may rejoice in the vehicle, but it has simply been produced to piggyback on the release of Spectre, the latest in the Bond movie saga, which is due out later this year.

Sure 007 has driven plenty of Aston Martins over the past 50 years, but the company would surely get more street cred if its limited edition was based on the special DB10 model the master spy actually stars with in Spectre.

Special Features of the car:

Craftsmanship: "Hand made in England"

Power: Zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds

Price: Same price as a tract house

2016 Aston Martin DB9 Volante

What? A luxury two-plus-two sports coupe

When? Deliveries begin in October

Where? Built in Gaydon, England

How much? $214,950 (gulp) plus $2,825. Price includes Gas Guzzler Tax

How big? 15.4 feet long, 6.7 feet wide

How thirsty? 13 miles per gallon in the city, 19 mpg highway, 15 overall

Samsung Presents Stunning Gadgets at Berlin IFA Gadget Show

Samsung under the name of SmartThings promoted themselves as the logical centre of interest of things at the 2015 IFA conference in Berlin.

One if its new devices is a sleeping disk that you place under the bed. Samsung says it’s capable of measuring your sleep and your blood pressure without even touching you.

The new SmartThings hubs seeks to offer consumers a way to enter the world of the connected home and uses the Zigbee and Z-Wave wireless protocols. They’re commonly used by connected devices such as smart lighting, sensors, and a new breed of internet-connected door locks.

However the hub’s ability to connect to lots of devices already in the market is what Samsung believes will make its ecosystem a winner. Items such as D-Link cameras, and even Philips Hue lightning (via a bridge) will work with the SmartThings hub. It will also connect standard internet addressable cameras (IP-devices).

However a Samsung spokesman said it won’t connect to Apple HomeKit devices which contain a proprietary Apple chip. Nevertheless the hub already supported 206 devices across manufacturers.

Users can buy their connected cameras or sensors independently or buy a starter kit for $US199. It contains a motion sensor, a multi sensor that can detect, say, whether a garage door is open or not and an arrival sensor which will track whether a family member, your dog or cat, is home or out and about.

The other part of Samsung’s connected home internet is apps made by SmartThings. They’re available across platforms on iOS, Android and Windows Phone and enable users to set up sequences of events that are triggered when you say, leave home, arrive back, fall asleep, wake up or start your car.

So you might program your SmartThings system to turn off your TV, lighting and turn the air conditioner down if you happen to fall asleep on the couch.

Or you might want your smart hub to switch on your coffee machine and toaster, and turn on heating in the bathroom and the radio when your sleeping disk detects that you have woken.

SmartHub will store video should your connected cameras detect an intruder and you can receive alerts, an SMS or push notification if this happens.

Video is continually buffered so that the system can save footage of an intruder just before they were detected at your home.

Samsung has been working with Dr Christos Mantzoros from Harvard University Medical School on its sleeping disk which uses a system called Samsung SleepSense to track and analyse sleep as well as manage what happens to your appliances and heating system when you fall asleep or wake up.

Being able to do this, and to measure your blood pressure as well, while under your bed sounds an amazing achievement, but we are yet to see how this works in practice. What happens if a couple in bed rolls over? Exactly who would the sleeping pad be measuring?

Samsung also announced an app called Car Mode for its Galaxy range that turns your smartphone into a menu driven entertainment system suitable for the dashboard.

It has formed a partnership with VW which will let owners control some aspects of their car from a phone or smartwatch, even when they’re not in it. This could be to unlock the car or to alter the air temperature.

Samsung pumped other devices such as a front loading washing machine that you can add clothes to mid cycle without it jettisoning all its water, a new robotic vacuum cleaner, the VR 9200 with a lot more suction power: 70 watts instead if 0.5 watts found on some models.

A Samsung representative said there had been a downturn in sales of robot vacuums due to their poor suction, but this was reversing with the advent of more powerful cleaners. The VR 9200 will cost you $1799 in Australia.
